Crawford Continues to Impress at Triple-A; Blankenhorn Hits 15th Homer

Here is a weekly update on coal region natives in pro baseball.

Here is our weekly roundup of Schuylkill County and other coal region players currently with Major League Baseball organizations in the 2024 season.

Reggie Crawford (North Schuylkill) – Pitcher, Sacramento River Cats

Crawford continues to move toward a potential promotion to the Major Leagues this season after another impressive outing last week.

In a game on June 5 against the Albuquerque Isotopes, Crawford pitched a perfect 6th inning in relief, striking out 2 of the 3 batters he faced.

Crawford has posted a 1.04 ERA over the course of those 8.2 innings, allowing just 3 hits and a single earned run. He’s struck out 11 and walked 7 with the Rock Cats.

Last Wednesday, Crawford finished off a perfect relief appearance with his second strikeout on this absolutely nasty pitch:

Travis Blankenhorn (Pottsville Area) – Outfield, Rochester Red Wings

Blankenhorn smashed his 15th home run of the season last week during a series against the Worcester Red Sox.

For the week, he went 6-for-21 at the plate, hitting safely in 5 of the 6 games against the Red Sox.

On the season, the Pottsville native is hitting .248 and has 45 RBI.

But the highlight of his week may have come with his glove. In a game on Sunday, Blankenhorn robbed Worcester’s Eddy Alvarez of a base hit with this spectacular diving grab in right field.

Joe Nahas (Marian Catholic) – Pitcher, Tennessee Smokies

Nahas got some extended work last week in the Smokies’ series against the Birmingham Barons.

The Marian Catholic grad appeared in games on June 4 and June 8, throwing 6.1 innings over both games.

Last Tuesday, Nahas went 2.2 innings, striking out 3 and walking 1. He allowed 2 hits and a single earned run on a solo home run.

In 3.2 innings on June 8 against the Barons, he struck out 3 again and allowed a solo homer.

Nahas has appeared in 7 games with the Double-A Smokies since his promotion on May 4. He’s posted a 5.02 ERA in 14.1 innings of work, allowing just 10 hits over that time.

His 19:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio with Tennessee is pretty impressive.

Thomas Schultz (Mount Carmel Area) – Pitcher, Wilmington Blue Rocks

Schultz got comfortable with his new team at High-A Wilmington rather quickly last week.

In his first two appearances with the Blue Rocks in a series against the Hudson Valley Renegades, Schultz threw 3 innings, allowing just 2 hits and no runs. He struck out 3 batters and walked 1.

Tom Reisinger (Mount Carmel Area) – Pitcher, Stockton Ports

Reisinger appeared in one game last week for the Ports against Crawford’s old team, the San Jose Giants.

He worked 3 innings of relief, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 3 batters.

Kaleb Sophy (Blue Mountain) – Pitcher, Glacier Range Riders

Sophy notched a second win on the season for the Pioneer League club on Sunday afternoon against the Ogden Raptors. He got the start and went 5.2 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs. Sophy struck out 6 and walked just 1 in that victory to boost his record to 2-0.

In a start on June 4, Sophy pitched 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs but did not factor in the decision. He struck out 2 and walked 4 but the Range Riders got the win in that one, 10-9.
