Gas prices have remained largely the same ever since that massive spike in price back in 2022. It was about this time that year when gas was at about $5 per gallon. Since then, prices have come back to the $3.50-4 range.
A AAA spokesperson says with the Memorial Day holiday in the past now, gas prices will likely drop more over the summer. However, any potential Atlantic hurricane could drive up prices temporarily.
“A storm impacting the Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers could push prices temporarily higher, so stay tuned,” AAA’s Andrew Gross says.
Strategic Petroleum Reserve Tapped to Lower Gas Prices
While AAA says demand is lower after the Memorial Day holiday, the reason gas prices are coming down may be rooted elsewhere.
President Joe Biden recently announced that he’s selling a million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve specifically to reduce prices at the pump ahead of the Fourth of July.
That move is being widely criticized by Republicans, according to a Washington Examiner report, who say he’s doing this to gain political points ahead of the November election.
