Police Say Someone Boscov’d Off with Copper Wire

Copper theft continues to be a problem locally … and globally.

State Police are investigating a reported theft of copper wire recently at the Boscov’s store outside Pottsville.

According to State Police-Schuylkill Haven, the theft happened sometime between February and last week at the store at Fairlane Village Mall.

Police say someone cut and stole copper wire that was attached to the store’s generator.

An investigation into this theft is still ongoing.

Copper thefts are still fairly regular here in Schuylkill County. We recently reported on some high-profile thefts of telephone cable that contains copper being taken right off utility poles.

And other media reports indicate the problem with copper theft isn’t going away. It’s a global problem, too.

A report from Recycling Today tells of the problem with copper thefts currently in Europe.

And Fox11 in Los Angeles reports there were more than 6,000 cases of copper wire theft reported there in 2023, alone.
