Grover the Groundhog did not see his shadow early Friday morning at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park. That means an early Spring for us here in Schuylkill County.
About 100 people gathered at Sweet Arrow Lake Clubhouse to celebrate this local spin on a popular Pennsylvania tradition happening clear across the state in Punxsutawney.
Here, Grover is a stuffed groundhog. He’s joined by his soul mate, Sweet Arrow Sue, for the day’s celebration.
Earlier on Groundhog Day, the world’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil also didn’t see his shadow – for only the 21st time in the history of the tradition – predicting an early Spring for all of Pennsylvania.
The local Groundhog Day event is hosted by Sweet Arrow Lake Conservation Association. Guests were offered a breakfast before everyone learned what the groundhog had to say.
Groundhog speaker Bob Evanchalk read off a poem, the word of Grover, that foretold the weather here for the near future.
Clouds in the morning will mean an early Spring,
Sunshine brings shadows and that’s not a good thing.
At 7:15, the skies were all gray,
And you know what it means, Spring’s on the way.
Grover’s prediction makes everyone cheer,
A great way to start a brand new Leap Year.
Revealing Grover’s weather forecast was just one part of the festivities at the Sweet Arrow Lake Clubhouse on Friday morning.
After everyone learned what to expect for the next few weeks, Leo DiSanto, from Lancaster, led off a solo performance with a rendition of I’ve Got You Babe, the Sonny & Cher song that started every February 2nd relived by Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) in the movie Groundhog Day.
A Chinese auction was also held to benefit the Association.
SUPER BOWL PICK: In addition to the weather, Grover also offered a prediction for next weekend’s Super Bowl. He’s going with the 49ers.
