Everyone wants to know if today’s snowstorm in Schuylkill County will be one of the biggest in the range of our short-term memory or if it’ll end up being a dud because of the potential for mixed precipitation.
So, we are going to take one last look at the latest weather model images to help determine if it’ll be a hit or a miss here in the coal region.
Saturday Morning Model Runs for Jan. 6 Snowstorm
Here are images of the latest runs for the more popular weather models … and we tried to find one that didn’t dump a significant amount of snow on us:
GFS Model
The American model (GFS) puts between 8-12 inches of snow on Schuylkill County. Highest accumulations are in the northern and extreme eastern Schuylkill County area.
Euro Model
The Euro model dumps 7-10 inches of snow on Schuylkill County. Again, the highest accumulations are in northern Schuylkill County.
NAM Model
This latest NAM model run has between 7-9 inches of snow falling on Schuylkill County. The highest amounts of snow in this model fall on western Schuylkill County, in areas like Pine Grove and Tremont.
HRRR Model
The HRRR model shows the largest range of snowfall accumulations for Schuylkill County. Most of us would get 6-8 inches of snow but one small plot in northern Schuylkill County gets close to 14 inches of snow in this run.
Canadian Model (GDPS)
Finally, the Canadian model is showing the highest accumulations of snow in southern and southeastern Schuylkill County. GDPS has us getting 8-10 inches of snow.
Again, we looked for a weather model that was more conservative with its snowfall forecast but couldn’t find it, at least not among the models most commonly referenced by weather forecasters.
As for those forecasts, the general consensus pretty much matches these weather models, albeit slightly more conservatively with some.
National Weather Service predicts between 4-10 inches of snow for Pottsville. Accuweather continues to predict between 4-8 inches in the city. The Weather Channel is predicting 10 inches to fall on Pottsville in the next 24 hours (as of 9 a.m. Saturday).
