PennDOT says travel restrictions on interstates frequented by Schuylkill County motorists go into effect for some vehicles starting Saturday morning ahead of an expected snowstorm to affect the area.
These “Tier 1” restrictions affect the following vehicles:
- Tractors without trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers
- Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a commercial motor vehicle
- Passenger vehicles towing trailers
- RVs and motorhomes
- School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches
- Motorcycles
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, those vehicles will be prohibited from the following roadways:
- I-81 from Maryland to I-78
- I-83 entire length
- Interstate 99, entire length
At noon, those vehicles won’t be allowed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike from New Stanton (Exit 75) to Carlisle (Exit 226).
Then, at 2 p.m., those vehicles will be prohibited from traveling on these roads:
- I-78 entire length
- I-81 from I-78 to New York
- I-80 from Exit 173 (Lamar) to New Jersey
- I-84 entire length
- I-180 entire length
- I-380 entire length
- Route 33 entire length
- U.S. 22 from I-78 to New Jersey
- Pa Turnpike Northeastern Extension (I-476) Lehigh Valley (Exit 56) to Clarks Summit (Exit 130)
“Tier 3” restrictions go into effect on these roads starting at 4 p.m. Saturday:
- I-81 from I-80 to New York
- I-84 entire length
- I-380 entire length
Under “Tier 3” restrictions, the only commercial vehicles allowed on the affected roads are loaded single trailers with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices, according to PennDOT. All vehicles affected by “Tier 1” restrictions are also prohibited from the road under “Tier 3” bans.
Schuylkill County is under a Winter Storm Warning beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and lasting until 1 a.m. Sunday. An expected 4-8 inches of snow is forecast to fall on the area.
