A crew from West End Hose Co. in Pottsville spent part of Sunday morning getting the most important part of the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration in place.
At 9 a.m., this crew brought to Garfield Square the giant bottle of Yuengling Lager that’ll rise up 50 feet at midnight to ring in the new year 2024.
This is one of two public New Year’s Eve celebrations held in Schuylkill County. The other is in Tamaqua, where a set of lighted eagles are illuminated up the ABC Hi-rise Apartments building to mark the beginning of a new year.
Getting the Lager Bottle in Place for Pottsville New Year’s Celebration
Back in Garfield Square this morning, there’s a process to getting the giant Lager bottle in place for the New Year’s celebration.
First, the American flag needs to be taken down for the day.
Then the big bottle needs to go sky high so it can be placed over the massive flag pole. The ladder on the firetruck certainly helps with that.
The bottle then needs to be lowered to get hooked up to the rigging that allows it to be cranked skyward as the clock counts down to midnight tonight.
The bottle gets hooked up to allow it to be cranked skyward and then it’s raised temporarily so it’s safe from ne’er-do-wells throughout the day.
