Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and Jefferson have announced their intention to merge, a step that could impact health care here in Schuylkill County.
The two organizations have signed a non-binding letter of intent to combine forces, aiming to establish a leading integrated care delivery system. This plan includes a national research university and an expanded not-for-profit health plan.
The merger, pending regulatory approvals and fulfillment of closing conditions, promises to enhance the health and well-being of both rural and urban communities.
LVHN operates two hospitals in Schuylkill County, both in Pottsville.
The merger is a strategic response to the evolving health care needs of communities, the companies say in a press release announcing their plans.
LVHN’s President and CEO, Brian A. Nester, DO, MBA, highlights the shared values and commitments of both organizations in saying, “Our alliance with Jefferson is a natural fit. Their success in health plan management and our shared commitment to clinical excellence and education will yield significant benefits, particularly for vulnerable populations.”
Upon completion, the combined entity will operate 30 hospitals and over 700 outpatient care sites.
Post-merger, Cacchione will continue as the CEO of the Jefferson Enterprise. Nester is slated to become the Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer and President of the legacy LVHN. The integrated leadership team and Board of Trustees will comprise members from both systems.
The merger between Jefferson and LVHN is expected to be finalized in 2024.
