Pottsville Mayor Dave Clews gave his 3-year-old granddaughter Alora the honor of lighting the city’s Christmas tree for 2023.
Several dozen people gathered Saturday evening on a rather brisk Garfield Square to watch Pottsville’s Christmas tree get illuminated for the first time this season.
A brief firetruck parade brought Santa Claus into the Square while some Christmas tunes were blared out over a loudspeaker before the tree was lit.
Earlier in the day, Mayor Clews and the Pottsville Recreation Commission hosted a North Pole Carnival at Discovery Park nearby.
With the push of a button – and a little help, maybe – Alora Clews powered up the more than 600 lights on the city’s 26-foot Christmas tree. This year’s tree was donated by Hexcel Corp.
The massive tree is now sparkling in white, red, and green lights with a big, bright star atop it on the west end of Garfield Square. You’d think it’d be impossible to miss but we all remember …

This proves the status quo of “it is determined to whom your related to” on what you can do in life… Glad no one else was considered in doing so, besides a family member. Way to go 12 Volt…
