Powerball Fever Rises as Jackpot Swells to $900 Million

You could buy St. Clair with that kind of cash!

powerball 900 million

With a colossal $900 million jackpot on the line, Powerball is setting the stage for the next drawing on Monday, July 17. The lottery giant’s prize pot, boasting a cash value of $465.1 million, now ranks as the third-largest in Powerball history and the seventh-largest in U.S. lottery records.

The staggering sum came about after Saturday’s Powerball draw failed to produce a jackpot winner. The elusive combination of white balls 2, 9, 43, 55, 57 and the red Powerball 18 remained unmatched.

However, lottery officials are encouraging participants to thoroughly check their tickets as there are nine different ways to win. Despite no jackpot victor, the nationwide Powerball drawing awarded over 3 million lucky ticket holders with lower-tier cash prizes, amassing a total payout of $24.5 million.

In Saturday’s draw, top prizes were snagged by three tickets from Colorado and Texas (two tickets), each matching all five white balls to pocket $1 million each. An additional 89 ticket holders successfully matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, earning them $50,000 each. Fourteen of these individuals smartly included the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their winnings to $100,000.

The last Powerball jackpot was won in the April 19 drawing when a lucky player in Ohio matched all six numbers to secure a princely sum of $252.6 million. Since then, 37 consecutive drawings have passed without a jackpot winner.

For the lucky individual who hits the jackpot on Monday night, the choice between an annuitized prize worth an estimated $900 million and a lump-sum payment of around $465.1 million lies ahead. These figures are before taxes, and if the annuity option is selected, it will be paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each increasing by 5%.

Powerball tickets can be purchased for $2 per play across 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Over half of the proceeds from the sale of each Powerball ticket stay in the jurisdiction where the ticket was bought. Powerball draws take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EST in the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee. Drawings are also live-streamed on Powerball.com.

The chances of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million.

As of now, the top 10 Powerball jackpots include this $900 million pot, trailing the $1.586 billion from January 2016 and the record $2.04 billion prize in November 2022. The rest of the list includes hefty sums ranging from $632.6 million to $768.4 million, claimed in states across the country over the past several years.
