Leroy J. Smith, 83 – Enjoyed Hunting and Fishing

Leroy J. Smith, age 83, of Barry Township, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Lehigh Valley Hospital- Cedar Crest, Allentown.

He was born on Sunday, June 2, 1940, in Hegins Twp, a son of the late Johnson F Smith and the late Maude I. (Savidge) Smith.

Leroy was a 1958 graduate of Tri-Valley High School.

He was a machinist at Peiffer Machine Services, Mount Aetna, prior to his retirement.

Leroy was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Fountain and also attended the Evangelical Methodist Church, Lavelle.

He was a member of the Myerstown Rod and Gun Club and the NRA.

Leroy enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening, tinkering with machines, tending to his therapy cats, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers, Eugene Smith and Emanuel Smith, and a sister, Sadie Schaeffer.

He is survived by his wife Doris E (Shadle) Smith, to whom he was married for 64 years.

He is also survived by five daughters, Brenda Scheuren and her husband Robert of Ashland, Sharon Kimmel and her husband Richard of Ashland, Debra Smith of Hegins, Charlotte Green and her husband Carl of Ashland, and Suzanne Zerbe and her husband Chris of Valley View; a son, David Smith of Riverdale, UT; twelve grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, William Smith and his wife Florence of Pottstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Evangelical Methodist Church, Lavelle, on July 3, 2023 with Rev. Joshua Mowery officiating.

Burial at Yarnell Cemetery, Barry Township.

Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Inc., Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.
