The Schuylkill County Historical Society (SCHS) is bustling with activity this summer, kicking off with a presentation on the Molly Maguires by Assistant Director Steve Young.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Society’s building located at 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville. Young’s talk aims to shed light on this secret society of Irish-American coal miners in the 19th century.
Admission for this intriguing session is free for Society members, while non-members are asked to contribute $5.
Following Young’s presentation, the SCHS has arranged for a special viewing of ‘NEPADOC,’ a visually enticing documentary detailing Northeastern Pennsylvania’s history over the past three centuries.
The film, created by Bloomsburg University communications studies professor David Heineman, will be screened on Thursday, July 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Majestic Theater, 209 N. Centre St., Pottsville.
Featuring historic images of Schuylkill County, this cinematic journey through time is free for Society members, with a $10 admission fee for the general public.
The summer’s activities continue with the Local Reads book club, meeting on Wednesday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the SCHS building. The book club will discuss two riveting novels, “Murder at Mountain Tavern” by Frackville native Greg Dillensnyder, and “Coal River” by Ellen Marie Wiseman.
Both books are set in Pennsylvania and highlight unique aspects of local history and culture.
