Richard Peter Scherer, age 69, of Mahanoy City, died on Sunday morning.
Born at the Ashland Hospital on July 9, 1953, he was the son of the late Charles “Pinky” Scherer and Eleanor Hansbury Scherer of Mahanoy Plane.
He was a 1971 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School and the Schuylkill County Vocational Technical School.
He was employed in sales for various agencies, the most recent being Baltimore Life Insurance.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Mahanoy City, and served as a trustee.
He enjoyed volunteering his time for church fundraisers and social events.
Richard devoted his time to the Mahanoy Area School Board for several years. He also played an integral role with the Mahanoy Area Alumni Association.
You could always find Richard and his late wife, Janet, attending their daughters’ school events. It was their greatest joy and they served on many of the Mahanoy Area Boosters Organizations together.
Richard loved spending each summer in Ocean City, New Jersey with his family.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Janet E. Scherer and a brother Charles Scherer.
Richard is survived by two daughters, Amy Scherer of Elizabethtown and Laurie Scherer of Hummelstown; a sister Kathleen Lawrence and her husband James of Lancaster; a brother Michael Scherer and his wife Christine of Lancaster; a sister Margaret Ellen Aldahonda and her husband Carlos of Lancaster; a brother Kevin Scherer of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; a sister-in-law Maggie Scherer of Frackville, his best friends Keith and Debbie Northey of Mahanoy City; a mother-in-law Joan E. Brady of Mahanoy City; a sister-in-law Joan K. Brady of Pottsville; a brother-in-law John Brady and his wife Theresa of Cary, N.C.; many cherished nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bailey.
Richard’s laughter was everybody else’s medicine. He will be always be remembered for his humor, smile and contagious laugh.
He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral on Saturday morning at 11 AM from the First United Methodist Church in Mahanoy City. The Rev. Bridget Wagner will officiate.
Interment will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the church on Saturday morning beginning at 9 AM.
Contributions in his name to the American Heart Association would be appreciated by the family and will be accepted at the visitation.
