She’s joining what’s expected to be a very crowded GOP field in 2023.

Schuylkill County’s Clerk of Courts Maria Casey says she’s running for County Commissioner in 2023.

Casey confirmed her intent to The Canary on Friday. She’ll enter what’s expected to be a packed Republican field for the County Commissioner seats up for grabs. Casey was elected as Clerk of Courts in 2019.

From what we’ve learned, these are the Republicans currently running for County Commissioner in 2023:

  • Timothy Henning
  • Jeff Dunkel
  • Maria Casey

These people have at least indicated to The Canary or have active, unofficial public campaigns. It’s also believed current Commissioners Chairman Boots Hetherington is running for election next year. But more are likely to enter the race ahead of the 2023 Primary, perhaps many more.

If it’s any indication, when former Commissioner Frank Staudenmeier died in 2020, more than 50 people submitted applications to replace him.

Since Hetherington was appointed as County Commissioner, Casey has first implored him publicly to distance himself from Commissioner George Halcovage.

And then when Hetherington has, Casey’s been there – using Public Comments during Commissioners meetings and occassional videos on a Facebook page she manages – vocally criticizing Hetherington’s policies and decisions.

Casey’s also been a vocal opponent of Halcovage, often speaking in defense of the 4 Jane Doe women who’ve filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Commissioner.
