About 600 gallons of diesel fuel have been reported stolen from a business in Schuylkill County.
According to State Police in Frackville, the alleged theft happened back on April 12 at JW Zaprazney Inc. in East Brunswick Twp., near New Ringgold.
Police say they’re using video surveillance in their investigation to determine who stole the fuel and how they did it.
The business, a used auto parts and salvage yard, says the fuel was stolen from several pieces of equipment on its sprawling property.
Diesel Fuel Theft on the Rise
This incident near New Ringgold is the latest in a growing number of reported diesel fuel thefts in the US and abroad. This isn’t surprising as the price of diesel fuel continues to climb.
According to AAA, the average cost of a gallon of diesel in Pennsylvania (on May 2, 2022) is $5.86. That’s up about 48 cents per gallon compared to the price last week. A year ago, a gallon of diesel cost $3.39. That puts a $3,500 price tag on the gas reported stolen in Schuylkill County in April.
Back in March, thieves stole about 1,000 gallons of diesel from a family-owned gas station in Texas. That theft took place over the course of 3 days, police say.
In April, a box truck was used to steal about 2,000 gallons of diesel from a school district in California.
Newsweek reports that gas thefts have increased across the country. More than $140,000 of gas has been reported stolen.
