A clean-up of a cemetery just outside Pottsville is one of several events planned by Schuylkill County Historical Society over the next month.
Right now, the Historical Society is looking for volunteers to help clean up the Mount Laurel Cemetery along Bulls Head Rd., Norwegian Township.
The planned cleanup is on Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. until noon. The Historical Society is looking for some people with lawn mowers. Contact them at 570-622-7540 or by emailing sch.hist@comcast.net. Volunteers who wish to help in the Mount Laurel Cemetery clean-up can show up the day of the event. Wear gloves and bring some gardening tools, if available.
Prior to that, the Historical Society is hosting a program on the history of the Reading & Northern Railroad. Matt Fisher, the general manager of the RNR passenger department, is leading the program. It happens on Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Society’s headquarters on N. Centre St. in Pottsville. The cost for this event is free to all Historical Society members and $5 for the general public.
A week later, “Porcupine Pat” McKinney will be at the Historical Society headquarters presenting a program on some trend-setting Schuylkill County residents. He’ll be talking about locals who were first with a “new trends, product, or service,” according to information from the Historical Society.
This program starts at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 and is also free to members and $5 for the general public.
For more information on these programs, contact the Historical Society by phone at 570-622-7540 or email sch.hist@comcast.net.
