Police have identified the people injured in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County on Wednesday.
According to information released today from State Police in Frackville, 27-year-old Kaitlin Smith, of Pottsville, remains in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest after her vehicle was struck twice by another motorist on the interstate in Mahanoy Township.
Two passengers in her vehicle have since been treated and released from a Pottsville hospital:
- Samuel Castronia, 27, of Pottsville
- Jaimylee Matthews, 21, of Fort Collins, Colorado
Smith was traveling in the passing lane of I-81 South on Wednesday afternoon, at about 5:40, when a vehicle in the driving lane veered into her lane, struck her vehicle and pushed her onto the shoulder of the highway. Smith re-entered the road and was again hit by an unknown driver.
That second impact caused Smith’s vehicle to roll over several times, ejecting Smith from her vehicle.
The unknown driver stopped his vehicle and allegedly approached a passenger in Smith’s vehicle but then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene. Police are still trying to identify the hit-and-run driver.
They say he’s in his 30s or 40s with brown or black hair. He was wearing a black collared shirt with dark pants. A logo was seen on the left chest of his shirt. Police say he was likely driving a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Chevrolet. They believe the SUV has damage to its front bumper area.
If you have any information on the driver who fled the scene, you’re asked to call State Police in Frackville at 570-874-5300.
