“Racist” Article on High School Basketball Players Riles Schuylkill County Readers

On Thursday, Nativity BVM’s boys’ basketball team won its first State Championship in school history. It took an epic second-half comeback and 4 extra minutes to make it happen.

It’s a day the players, coaches, and school community will never forget.

But when they and much of Schuylkill County awoke on Thursday morning, they likely didn’t have those same feelings. Rather than focusing on the game, many were talking about an article appearing in the RepublicanHerald newspaper they say is racist.

Titled “Twin Towers”, the article is supposed to be about their contribution to the Hilltoppers basketball team. Instead, all people are talking about is the lede.

Here’s the beginning that’s gotten so many people in an uproar:

What were they thinking? We can’t think of any reason whatsoever why it would be necessary to include their skin color in this article. Certainly, they can do better than this.

At least they spared us any 9/11 references. Who knows what would have been written …
