Carol Perry Scheihing, of Oakton, VA, formerly of Pottsville, passed away unexpectedly on March 14, 2021 due to complications of abdominal surgery, at Reston Hospital Center, Reston, VA, with her family by her side.
Born in Pottsville, PA on March 21, 1934 to John and Bettina (Long) Perry. She was a graduate of Pottsville High School, class of 1952. She furthered her education at Penn State University and George Mason University with degrees in English and Dietetics. She also pursued advanced studies and certifications in commensurate fields.
She spent her entire career in the Health, Benefits and Defense arena. Her primary position while in Pottsville was an Assistant Director for Veterans Benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Upon marriage she, and her husband Fred, were stationed overseas and became an active civilian under military assignment spouse. She was an interviewer and writer for “Stars and Stripes” Military Newspaper. Her passion for writing continued in many facets throughout her life.
When she and her husband, returned from living overseas, they continued serving Our Country at different locations that required Fred’s qualifications, clearances and background including State College PA, the Main Line of Philadelphia, Berwyn, PA and finally to the Washington, DC suburbs of Fairfax and Oakton, Virginia.
She was a loving, caring, and stoic mother and spouse who effectively ran the home yet as the needs arose that her skills were requested outside the home, she implemented her talents and kept everything running smoothly. A perfect example of this was the Blizzard of 1979; where the Washington, DC area had record breaking snow, in two “back-to-back” storms. Yet, unlike many, she planned and had the driveway shoveled and car at the foot of the driveway backed in and ready to go, all while taking care of her two children! At that time Fred was on one of his numerous international business trips to Israel in his capacity as a Branch Chief for the Defense Intelligence Agency, yet he was so concerned he made an international call to check on his family.
At the time of her passing she was in process of writing a hybrid autobiography. She was an avid reader of numerous newspapers and journals along with supplementing the news via television. She was up to date with knowledge of everything going on in the world, virtually until the day she died!
She took pride in her Catholic Faith and affinity for St. Anne and St. Jude.
For many years she enjoyed planning and preparing gourmet quality meals while still considering their nutritional aspects as well as their appearance.
She had a passion for Good Music, Broadway, Fine Food, Travel, Clothing, Purses, and Aesthetics. In all instances she was an interesting and engaged conversationalist whether with her family, friends (many sadly deceased) and whoever she encountered. She had a great appreciation of History, in that she both experienced many historic events personally, and continuously accumulated a wealth of knowledge that extended beyond her time. Her ability to keep up with the latest technology surpassed many of her peers, this was encouraged by a husband that built Television Sets, then computers and kids that had her using a cell phone over thirty years ago!
She is predeceased by her beloved and cherished husband of 58 years, Frederick Andrew Scheihing (Sept 15, 1933-Jan 27, 2020) her parents John and Bettina (Long) Perry, all five of her siblings their spouses, in-laws, and a nephew.
She is survived by their daughter Dr. Anne-Lisa Winters, and their son Gregory F. Scheihing (Associate Broker, RE/MAX Xecutex) of Oakton, VA, a niece, and nephew.
