A Connecticut man wanted for attempted homicide was taken into custody on Saturday along Interstate 78 in Hamburg. He had the woman he tried to kill in the passenger seat alongside him.
State Police at Hamburg reported Sunday that they were called in to assist colleagues from PSP-Belfast and PSP-Fogelsville late Saturday morning. At the time, PSP-Belfast had received word from police in East Hartford, Connecticut, that Henry Benitez-Navarro, 31, of East Hartford, was wanted for attempted murder and they tracked his cell phone activity to Pennsylvania.
Connecticut Man Wanted for Stabbing, Kidnapping Picked Up in Hamburg
According to a Hartford Courant report, Benitez-Navarro fled Connecticut on Saturday morning when neighbors reported seeing him force a woman into his car, stabbed her, and leaving the area.
Eventually, the barracks in Fogelsville and Hamburg were notified as the monitoring revealed Benitez-Navarro was traveling west on I-78.
Troopers with the Hamburg barracks spotted a vehicle matching the description they’d been told.
Benitez-Navarro got off I-78 at Exit 30 in Hamburg but hopped right back on the highway. That’s when PSP-Hamburg made a vehicle stop. Other troopers from the barracks joined the initial responding unit and were joined by others from PSP-Fogelsville and PSP-Schuylkill Haven.
When they pulled over and approached Benitez-Navarro, they also found a white Hispanic female, as described in their report, in the passenger seat suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Benitez-Navarro is suspected of stabbing the woman, 25, and kidnapping her from Connecticut.
The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for the stab wounds. Police say she’s listed in stable condition.
In addition to the attempted homicide and kidnapping charges he faces in Connecticut, State Police at Hamburg have tacked on fugitive charges against Benitez-Navarro. They took him to Berks County Prison awaiting extradition to Connecticut.
