Halftime Wake-up Calls Propel Local Teams to Week 2 Victories

There were a few Schuylkill County high school football teams that maybe needed a little halftime wake-up call Friday night.

And it appears many of them got the message.

Teams like Blue Mountain, Williams Valley, Minersville each used huge second half performances Friday night to win their Week 2 games.

And then there were some other local teams that didn’t need that halftime “pep talk”. For squads like Pine Grove, North Schuylkill, Tamaqua, and Jim Thorpe, their victories were sealed early.

Here’s a look at some of the top local games from Week 2 of the Coal Region Football 2019 season:

Blue Mountain 50, Midd-West 19

The Eagles outscored Midd-West 29-0 in the second half. And the Mustangs were close to taking a lead into halftime.

Blue Mountain improves to 2-0 on the season with two convincing wins. This week, they travel down Route 61 for a game with unbeaten Hamburg.

Minersville 23, Nativity BVM 0

Points have been hard to come by at Minersville this year.

Earlier this week, the school’s JV football team battled to a 0-0 tie with Williams Valley’s JV squad.

And then on Friday night, renewing an historic rivalry with the Pottsville Catholic school, it wasn’t much better. The Battlin’ Miners held a 2-0 lead going into halftime. But a touchdown on the first drive of the second half and two more 3rd quarter TDs were enough to do in the Green Wave.

Minersville is now the only team in Schuylkill League Division 2 with a win this year. Let’s hope more get in the Win column before league play opens.

Williams Valley 43, Newport 21

The Vikings limped into halftime at Newport on Friday night, too. Its offense struggled to get anything going and trailed the Buffaloes 21-6 at the half.

Williams Valley’s victory is the first league win of the season in the Tri-Valley Conference and it looks like they’ll need all of them this season.

That’s because another Schuylkill County team in the TVC is tearing up the early part of the season.

Pine Grove 61, Millersburg 7

The Cardinals weren’t one of those teams that needed halftime reminder. Pine Grove went into the break with a 46-0 lead over the Indians.

So far this year, the Cards scored 111 points in 2 games. They’ve allowed just 15.

Next week, Pine Grove goes on the road to Newport for another Tri-Valley Conference game.

Tamaqua 50, Mahanoy Area 0

Tamaqua hasn’t allowed a point this season and racked up big wins over Mahanoy Area and Line Mountain. A tougher test awaits this week when the Blue Raiders take on a Schuylkill Haven team desperate for a win this year.

Jim Thorpe 42, Marian Catholic 0

The Olympians were all over the Colts from the beginning and start the year 2-0. They’ll face another non-league test this week when travelling to Lansford to play Panther Valley.

North Schuylkill 56, Shamokin 6

It appears some Schuylkill League teams may have their hands full with the Spartans. After “stumbling” out of the block in Week 1 (still a big win for North Schuylkill), the Spartans seemingly got their act together in time to send the visitors back to where they came from in a hurry.

North Schuylkill jumped all over the Indians quickly, leading 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans head to Wyomissing this Saturday for a 1:30 game.

Other Week 2 scores:

  • Lehighton 27, Schuylkill Haven 14
  • Juniata 21, Tri-Valley 7
  • Hamburg 49, Panther Valley 14
  • Wyomissing 21, Pottsville 20 (2ot)
  • Jenkintown 47, Shenandoah Valley 8
