A big win over Hazleton in Week 1 of the 2019 high school football season vaulted Pottsville into WNEP’s first regular season Super 16 Football Countdown.
The Crimson Tide defeated Hazleton, 42-7, last Friday, in their season opener on the road. Previously unranked, Pottsville moved into #13 on the WNEP poll.
The top local team remains North Schuylkill at #2 on the WNEP countdown. On Friday, the Spartans turned aside Loyalsock 33-13 to start the season on the right foot. North Schuylkill came into the season as the pre-season #2 on WNEP’s poll.
Two other Schuylkill League teams stayed in the countdown. Tamaqua won last Friday, shutting out Line Mountain, 40-0. They stayed at #9.
And Jim Thorpe actually dropped one spot after it barely escaped Schuylkill Haven in the season opener, 10-7. The Olympians move to #11, from #10, after their Week 1 win.
These teams will look to stay in the rankings another week. On Friday, North Schuylkill hosts Shamokin in what should be a good game. Tamaqua plays host to Mahanoy Area in a non-league matchup of Schuylkill County teams, and Pottsville hosts Wyomissing on the Week 2 schedule.
