Williams Valley Seeks Another PIAA Softball Title

Williams Valley tries for its second PIAA Class 1A softball championship in the last 4 years this morning at Penn State University in State College.

The Lady Vikings take on DuBois Central Catholic at 11 a.m. Friday.

PIAA Class 1A Softball Championship: Williams Valley vs. DuBois Central Catholic

Williams Valley has been on a tear in the PIAA state playoffs. In 3 games so far, Williams Valley outscored opponents 33-5.

Here’s a look at how the Lady Vikings reached the championship game:

  • First Round: Williams Valley 14, Bristol 4
  • Quarterfinals: Williams Valley 14, Old Forge 0
  • Semifinals: Williams Valley 15, Millersburg 1

The Lady Vikings opponent faced a few more stiffer challenges on the road to the championship game. DuBois Central Catholic is the District 9 champion.

Here’s a look at how the Cardinals reached the Class 1A softball finals:

  • First Round: DuBois Central Catholic 14, Leechburg 4
  • Quarterfinals: DuBois Central Catholic 6, Claysburg Kimmel 5
  • Semifinals: DuBois Central Catholic 3, West Greene 2

The Cardinals 3-2 win over West Greene in the semifinals spoiled the chance at a 4th consecutive 1A softball finals between WG and Williams Valley.

Here’s a look at the last 10 champions in PIAA Class 1A Softball. (PIAA expanded from 4 to 6 classes in 2017. It went from 3 to 4 in 2005.)

Schuylkill League teams have won 4 of the last 10 championships in Class 1A. That includes Williams Valley in 2016 and 2013 and Minersville in 2014 and 2011.
