Pine Grove scored 5 runs on 5 hits, including a pair of triples to overcome a rare deficit and win the PIAA Class 3A softball championship Friday.
The Lady Cardinals topped Bald Eagle Area, 7-3, at Penn State University.
Pine Grove Wins PIAA Class 3A Softball Championship
Pine Grove took a lead after the first but surrendered 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Those were the first runs Pine Grove allowed in the state tournament.
The Lady Cards chipped away at the deficit with a run in the 5th inning, cutting Bald Eagle’s lead to 3-2.
Eventually, the bats came alive and in the 6th inning, down to its last six outs to secure a perfect undefeated season, Pine Grove put the game away.
Olivia Lehman and Megan Wolfe connected on back-to-back triples to put a charge into a 5-run rally. That put the Cards up for good, 7-3.
Megan Wolfe retired Bald Eagle in the 7th to secure Pine Grove’s state championship and get the win.
Wolfe replaced Lehman as Pine Grove’s pitcher in the 5th inning and didn’t allow a hit.
Pine Grove had 10 hits on the afternoon. Kate Rittenbaugh had 3, including a double. Lehman and Casey Kershner each added a pair of hits.
Pine Grove finishes with a 28-0 record in 2019.
