Six Schuylkill League teams get started on their drive for a state championship in baseball or softball on Monday.
This is the tentative schedule for the state baseball and softball playoffs. Of course, this schedule is subject to the whims of Mother Nature:
- First Round: Monday, June 3
- Quarterfinals: Thursday, June 6
- Semifinals: Monday, June 10
- Finals: Thursday and Friday, June 13-14
Here’s a look at the first round match-ups involving local teams:
PIAA Class 2A Baseball
Schuylkill Haven vs. Dock Mennonite
The Hurricanes, the champs out of District 11, face the District 1 winners Dock Mennonite. First pitch happens at 4 p.m. Monday at Bears Stadium in Boyertown.
Dock Mennonite, from Lansdale, is listed as the #1 team in Pennsylvania Class 2A at MaxPreps.com. Schuylkill Haven is ranked 8th.
The winner of this game gets the winner of South Williamsport vs. Blue Ridge in the quarterfinals.
PIAA Class 4A Baseball
North Schuylkill vs. Cardinal O’Hara
The high-powered Spartans face a tough test against District 12 champs Cardinal O’Hara. First pitch for this one happens at 1 p.m. at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor.
The Spartans come in as the top-ranked team in 4A, per the MaxPreps rankings.
Winning this game gets someone a date with the winner of the Dallas vs. Hamburg first-round game.
PIAA Class 5A Baseball
Blue Mountain vs. Gettysburg
The Eagles get to play closest to home among all the local teams in action on Monday. They’ll face the #2 seed out of District 3, Gettysburg, in a 4:30 start Monday in Pine Grove.
According to MaxPreps rankings, Blue Mountain is 4th in Class 5A. Gettysburg comes in at 10th.
The winner here gets the winner of another first-round game, Bayard Rustin vs. Archbishop Wood.
In Class 1A baseball, District 11 champion Tri-Valley lost a play-in game over the weekend, knocking the Bulldogs out of the tournament.
PIAA Class 1A Softball
Williams Valley vs. Bristol
The Lady Vikings look to build on their District 11 title in a first-round game against Bristol, the District 1 champion.
The game takes place at 3 p.m. at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Williams Valley is ranked #3 in Class 1A in Pennsylvania, according to MaxPreps.
Winning this game gets someone a meeting with the winner of Bucktail vs. Old Forge.
PIAA Class 3A Softball
Pine Grove vs. Masterman
The Lady Cards bring that impressive 24-0 record into Monday’s game against the District 12 runners-up.
Pine Grove also gets a bit of a home game. They only need to travel to Tamaqua for the opening round of states. First pitch on Monday is at 11 a.m.
Pine Grove’s ranked 4th in Class 3A, according to MaxPreps. Masterman, out of Philadelphia, is at 26th is Class 3A.
PIAA Class 4A Softball
Blue Mountain vs. James Buchanan
The Eagles travel the least to get to their first round matchup. They head to Pottsville for a 1 p.m. first pitch against James Buchanan, the runner-up in District 3.
The winner here gets the winner of Bellefonte and Mt. Pleasant in the next round.
This team from Mercersburg gets a lot of love from MaxPreps. They come in at 9th in the Class 4A rankings. Blue Mountain is down at 26th.
