You Had Us at 48 Bleenies – Block Party Season Underway in the Coal Region

Photo from Facebook/Columbia Hose & Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 in Shenandoah

We’re zipping through Facebook on Friday night and a post comes up from Columbia Hose & Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 in Shenandoah.

For the first time since 2014, according to the Shenandoah Sentinel, they’re hosting an annual block party.

It’s great to hear that a block party is coming back and not fading into history.

But seriously? 48 bleenies!?

Is this a challenge? And at a place that sells bleenies by the dozen like this, what person has the guts to order 1?

Schuylkill County Block Party Season

Block party season in Schuylkill County “officially” got underway last weekend with the festivities at Friendship Fire Co. No. 1, Englewood.

Talk about bleenies. Reports from the scene this year suggest people waited in line for over an hour for some bleenies.

But not the winners of the one-time Bleenie Line Fast Pass.

Take a look at this Facebook post from the hosey on Day 2 of the block party. Serious bleenie situation here:

And if you see this bean soup video and you weren’t there last weekend, you’re going to be pissed:

Next weekend, they’re fired up for the annual block party at Rainbow Hose Company in Schuylkill Haven.

Block parties used to be a big part of the coal region community. And now it seems there are far less than there used to be.

englewood’s bleenies were really good….good balance of potato and onion and a nice, creamy texture. A hidden gem, if you know where to go when you’re there, is at the Girardville St.Patrick’s day parade….a garage not far from the AOH lodge has some really tasty ones! more like latkes than bleenies….my faves are still yorkville’s.

The best belenies were at St Stan’s Polish Day @ South Cass picnic grounds every August. Now I may be biased but the long lines didn’t lie… My Daddy made the batter! 😊.. St Stan’s was our family church… How I miss the old days….

Sounds like it’s time to list the house and move back.

There’s not even any block parties here. It’s a very different world.

There are fewer and fewer here, too. Very sad.
