Rain postponed a number of District 11 softball playoff games Thursday.

But in the games that did happen, it spelled the end of the road for a couple of Schuylkill County teams.

Class 5A

Pottsville Blanked By Southern Lehigh, 6-0

Games outside the area did occur, though. In fact, the Class 5A semifinals held at DeSales University were moved up to beat the rain. It almost worked to perfection.

The first game between #4 Pottsville and top-seeded Southern Lehigh was delayed midway through by rain and lightning. In the end, however, the Lady Tide softball team was blanked by Southern Lehigh Thursday afternoon, 6-0.

The Slaters move on to the championship game against Bangor, which beat East Stroudsburg-South, 10-0 on Wednesday.

Class 4A

Tamaqua Comes Up Short, Blue Mountain Forced to Wait

Tamaqua nearly pulled off its second upset of the Class 4A softball playoffs. The Blue Raiders came up just short in an 8-7 loss to top seed Northwestern Lehigh. The games was the first of three moved up to beat the expected rain and heavy thunderstorms predicted for the area. First pitch on this game was 11 a.m. at DeSales University.

However, in the other semifinal game scheduled Thursday, it never happened. So #2 Blue Mountain and #3 Bethlehem Catholic try again Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Pine Grove.

Class 3A

Pine Grove Tries Again Friday

The Lady Cardinals’ bid to advance to the Class 3A softball championship game also got pushed back by rain expected in the area Thursday. Their semifinal game with Notre Dame-Green Pond is now Friday at 7 p.m. at Blue Mountain High School.

If the Cards can advance, they’ll face Salisbury in the District 11 Class 3A final. They upset #2 Palmerton on Thursday, 3-1.

Class 2A

Washed Out Thursday

The Class 2A semifinals were supposed to happen Thursday at Blue Mountain but the rain over Schuylkill County forced those games back a day. On Friday, now, #1 Schuylkill Haven faces #4 Marian Catholic at 3 p.m. and then #2 Minersville takes on #3 Northern Lehigh at 5 p.m. Both games are at Blue Mountain High School in Orwigsburg.

Class 1A

Semifinals Rained Out Until Friday

The two semifinals in Class 1A were scheduled for fields in Pottsville and Tamaqua but they’ll wait until Friday, too.

At 4 p.m. in Tamaqua, #2 Nativity BVM takes on #3 Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg. And at 4:30 p.m., top-seeded Williams Valley plays #4 Mahanoy Area.
