An employee at a Schuylkill County logistics business was arrested on theft charges last month after she allegedly attempted to steal $1,000 worth of Meta sunglasses concealed in her pockets.
Mariavely Roman, 27, of Hazleton and an employee at ID Logistics, New Castle Township, is facing a misdemeanor theft charge.
Police say they were dispatched to the business at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 for a report of a theft. A manager at the business reportedly told police that Roman was attempting to exit the secure work floor to go to the employee break room.
Employees at the facility are required to pass through a security checkpoint equipped with metal detectors when leaving the floor.
Police say a security guard was alerted to an object in Roman’s pockets as she passed through the detectors. The affidavit states that Roman initially refused to take the items out of her pockets.
Roman was subsequently taken to a side room. According to police, the manager had Roman remove the items, which were identified as two pairs of Ray-Ban glasses equipped with a Meta camera. The glasses are valued at $500 each, totaling $1,000.
Police say they interviewed Roman at the scene with translation assistance provided by a Human Resources employee.
Roman allegedly told police that she discovered an open box while leaving the work floor. She claimed she took the two pairs of sunglasses “to present them to leadership so they knew there was an open box.”
Police say Roman did not explain why it was necessary to take possession of two pairs of glasses to notify a supervisor. When asked by police if taking merchandise from the secure floor to the break room area is standard operating procedure, Roman reportedly stated that it is not.
On Monday, police filed a misdemeanor theft charge against Roman. She’s been ordered to appear before Magisterial District Judge Edward Lewis (Port Carbon) in February for a preliminary hearing.
