Schuylkill County Man Allegedly Fled Scene of Two Crashes Then Backed Into Police Patrol Vehicle While DUI

Montgomery facing numerous charges

A Schuylkill County man faces numerous charges after State Police say he caused two vehicle crashes, attempted to flee a third scene, and struck a patrol vehicle while under the influence last month.

Police say on Nov. 15, Tyler Montgomery, 32, of Pottsville, was taken into custody following the series of incidents in Cressona and North Manheim Township.

Troopers were initially dispatched shortly before 11:30 a.m. that day to the CVS near Cressona Mall for a report of a hit-and-run crash.

Police say that prior to the dispatch, Montgomery, driving a silver Subaru Legacy, struck a tan Honda CR-V stopped at a red light on Sillyman St. in Cressona. Montgomery allegedly fled that scene and was followed by the Honda driver to CVS.

While en route, police say they received information regarding a second crash on Pottsville St. involving the same silver Subaru. In that incident, it’s alleged Montgomery was traveling west, driving too fast for conditions, when he struck the rear of a blue Kia Sportage with three people inside, including two juvenile passengers.

Upon arriving at the CVS, a Trooper says they observed the silver Subaru with hood and bumper damage positioned behind the Kia Sportage. Police say they pulled behind Montgomery’s Subaru and activated their emergency lights.

As police approached the vehicle, the Subaru’s reverse lights activated. Police say they could see Montgomery slumped over with his head facing the floor.

The vehicle began to reverse, prompting the Trooper to bang on the window. Police say this startled Montgomery, who then hit the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to accelerate backward and strike the patrol vehicle before coming to a stop.

Montgomery was reportedly removed from his vehicle. When police attempted to handcuff him, Montgomery allegedly tensed his arms, refused to place them behind his back, and attempted to turn around. He was then placed on the ground and taken into custody.

Police say Montgomery appeared lethargic and spoke with slurred speech, believing he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Montgomery was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pottsville for evaluation. He reportedly refused to submit to a blood test.

Earlier this week, police filed numerous charges against Montgomery at District Court in Orwigsburg. Included among them are a misdemeanor count of DUI, four counts of reckless endangerment, and one count each of resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and accidents involving damage to vehicles or property. He’s also been cited with more than handful of summary traffic violations.

Montgomery has been ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing at the Orwigsburg court on March 3, 2026.
