Schuylkill County Man Reportedly Stole Pickup to Go to McDonald’s

A Schuylkill County man has been jailed on an accusation that he stole a truck from a property where he was being allowed to stay so he could go to McDonald’s.

State Police say they were called to a home on Valley St. in New Philadelphia at about 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 for a report of a stolen vehicle. The owner said someone took his 1998 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup truck.

He said the vehicle was stored at a property he owned just down the street. The owner said there was just one set of keys and the only other person who had access to those keys besides himself was a person living at that second residence, who was the only other person authorized to drive the truck.

That person reportedly told the owner prior to police arrival, “Michael stole your truck,” police report. Michael was identified as Michael Sura, 43.

The resident of that second home where the truck was parked reported that he’d allowed Sura to stay with him for a few days and last had contact with him an hour prior to the truck was reported stolen. He said he had been unable to reach Sura since the truck was gone.

The next morning, shortly after 8 a.m., police say they returned to the scene and saw the reported stolen truck. Police say they then went to Sura’s mother’s home and made contact with Sura.

Sura reportedly told police that he took the truck to go to McDonald’s to get some food. He said he returned to New Philadelphia and left the truck on Lake St.

Police charged Sura with felony theft and receiving stolen property as well as a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Plachko, who set bail at 10% of $5,000. Sura is currently being held at Schuylkill County Prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 25.
