Minersville Police Sporting Pink Patches in October to Support Local Cancer Survivors

Sales of patches to benefit a local battling breast cancer

Police officers in Minersville are going pink this month to support those affected by breast cancer.

For the entire month, officers will be sporting a special pink patch on their uniform sleeves. And the entire community can get involved in the effort, too.

In addition to the patches on police uniforms, the public is invited to purchase one of these special, limited edition patches for $10. There were only 100 patches made and proceeds from their sale will go to help a local resident impacted by breast cancer.

“Everyone knows someone that’s dealing with this,” Chief Jeff Bowers tells The Canary. “We just thought it was important to give back to the community.”

Patches can be purchased by stopping in at the police station on N. Delaware Ave. during regular business hours. Police will also have a stand set up at an upcoming Minersville Area home football game to sell the remainder.

When the patches sell out, the money collected from their sale will be donated to one recipient in the borough battling breast cancer.

Bowers said donating the money to a national cancer organization was considered but police wanted to keep the money in the community.

He said a new cause will be selected each year and a special patch will be created. If sales are as brisk as they’re expected to be this year, it’s possible more patches will be created in future years.

I know the sediment is a good cause but that looks unprofessional for a Police Department. Also, not fair to all the other causes in the world to single out one to wear a patch for.
