Officials in Saint Clair voted Tuesday night to honor late Councilman William Dempsey by naming a playground after him.
Dempsey passed away Sept. 23. He was 75.
He was a lifelong resident of the borough and graduated from Saint Clair High School in 1967.
Borough Council members voted unanimously to rename the Third Street Playground after Dempsey.
According to his obituary, Dempsey dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving the youth in Saint Clair.
He was the manager of numerous Saint Clair Little League championship teams and launched the first 9-10-year old Little League baseball tournament in Schuylkill County.
Dempsey also coached Saint Mary’s CYO basketball and Saint Clair Area School District’s 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball team.
In addition to his youth sports involvement, Dempsey is also credited with improving recreational areas in Saint Clair, including upgrades and an expansion of the Third Street Playground.
Board members also voted, at the request of Joann Brennan, to have a placard created to honor Dempsey’s memory, specifically honoring his commitment to the youth of Saint Clair.
Prior to their vote, Pat McCord urged council members to do something to honor Dempsey’s legacy.
“Bill has been a staple in our community for such a long time, especially the youth,” McCord said.
