Solution to Cressona’s Speeding Problem Could Be … in the Uline Catalog?

Permanent or portable humps?

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone in Cressona that believes speeding isn’t a problem on borough streets.

With a limited budget and resources – Cressona hasn’t had a police force in years – borough officials have been pondering ways to curb speeding motorists.

Last month, borough engineer Steve Moyer presented possibilities in the forms of speed bumps and humps and other road features that could slow vehicles down, at least a little bit.

However, those could be expensive and with a high price tag, it means Cressona may only be able to afford a couple of them. At Monday’s Borough Council meeting, members instructed Moyer to seek out proposals for speed humps, which he said he’ll present in September.

But there may be another solution, according to information gleaned from a borough official in Media, Delaware County, by Cressona Mayor Sandy Renninger.

Renninger said she recently spoke to Media’s Public Works Director Mike Green. He said the borough uses portable speed humps to curb fast drivers.

She said that Media purchased these devices from the Uline catalog, of all places. These portable speed humps can be purchased right from the catalog for about $260 apiece.

“It is a very normal thing outside of this area,” Renninger, who works in Montgomery County, says.

The mayor said the humps are fastened to the road with a lag bolt and they can be removed in the winter so roads can be plowed. Anchors for these humps are kept in the ground and holes can be filled over the winter or if the hump is moved to a new location.

She said the temporary humps have less regulations attached to them. PennDOT doesn’t have to be contacted when they’re installed.

If Cressona were to purchase these portable humps, they would likely install a ‘HUMP’ sign where they’re located to warn drivers of their presence.

Media, Renninger says, has purchased about a handful of these devices and every year, they rotate them around the borough.

This idea seemed to be welcomed by Cressona council members.

“It’s an interesting concept,” Council President Linda Walinsky said.

Councilman Bob Barr seemed to favor the portable humps because of the cost. He thinks the borough could get 10 through Uline for the price of a single permanent hump.

“It’s a no-brainer,” Barr said.
