Schuylkill County Man Jailed on Aggravated Assault, Strangulation Charges After Fight Over Brown Water

Klinger held on $50K bail

A Schuylkill County man remains behind bars after he allegedly grabbed a woman by the neck during an altercation last week about brown water.

State Police say they responded to a home in Norwegian Township at just before noon on Friday for a domestic assault incident that allegedly occurred earlier that day.

At the scene, police say they spoke with a woman who said she had confronted Gary Klinger, 57, about the water being brown earlier that day. Klinger allegedly responded by yelling at the woman and then attacking her by placing his hands around her neck and trying to choke her.

The victim reportedly told police that Klinger had his hands around her neck for about 3 seconds and was saying that he was going to kill her. Eventually, the woman got away from Klinger, ran to the backyard and phoned 9-1-1.

Police say at the scene, they saw signs of injuries on the woman that were consistent with her story. They say they also spoke to Klinger at the scene and he reportedly told them that the woman had woken him up that morning to confront him over the brown water. He alleged that she was holding a stick at the time, police say in their criminal complaint.

Klinger was arraigned Friday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker and charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and strangulation as well as a misdemeanor count of simple assault and a summary count of harassment.

Kilker set bail at $50,000 cash and remanded Klinger to Schuylkill County Prison. A preliminary hearing before Senior Magisterial Judge Edward Lewis in Port Carbon is scheduled for March 3.
