Students with Schuylkill Technology Center-South Campus’ Youth Summit Group visited Hillside SPCA near Pottsville on Wednesday for two reasons.
One was to give some much-needed attention to the feline residents at the shelter. The other was to drop off a generous donation to the tune of $600.
Students raised that money through what’s called a Penny War.
According to Gary Hess, a history teacher at STC-South, students collected pennies, nickels, and dimes during lunch periods. Those coins added to a class’s score.
Quarters, or anything higher, could be placed in an opposing class’s jar and those coins counted against that team’s score. The winning team got themselves a prize and the shelter was able to get itself a nice donation that’ll help pay for a nice supply of wet food for the cats, dogs, and bunnies.
