Community/Volunteer Fair set for Nov. 12 at Schuylkill Regional Airport

The Schuylkill County Commissioners and Schuylkill Connects will convene a Community/Volunteer Fair on Nov. 12 at Schuylkill Regional Airport–Joe Zerbey Field, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Every year, the Youth Summit continues to develop its basic mission to engage, equip and support youth for the future. The Youth Summit continues to gather students from all county high schools to engage them in making the county a better place for them to live, work, play and raise their families.

The Youth Summit Ambassadors consist of student groups from every school district, two Catholic schools and a charter school. The Ambassadors meet monthly with government officials, community members and business professionals to learn about Schuylkill County.

The September meeting was held at the Salvation Army, and in October organizers held regional meetings at employer sites where school districts were grouped together and learned about for-profit organizations in the area, how those organizations are involved in the community, and about civic engagement and the importance of voting.

Pine Grove Area, Williams Valley and Tri-Valley met at Sterman Masser Inc.; Tamaqua Area and Marian Catholic High School met at EMD Electronics; and Blue Mountain, Schuylkill Haven Area and Gillingham met at the Walk-In Art Center. North Schuylkill, Mahanoy Area and Shenandoah Valley’s regional meeting is being planned for a future date.

The Volunteer Fair will introduce students to organizations from across the county and enable them to learn more about the organizations’ missions, as well as opportunities to volunteer or support the organizations. Students will also learn how they can partner with attendees for the Youth Summit’s annual community service projects. In 2020, the summit introduced a mini-grant application through which schools can apply for funds to implement a community service project.

The Youth Summit continues to be supported by community leaders who serve as an advisory group and the Schuylkill County Commissioners. Additionally, Katharina Stuerzl and Kate Zimmerman serve as program facilitators and guide student executive committee members Pierce Grimm (Tamaqua), Alanza Smith (Blue Mountain) and Maggie Colna (Pottsville) to generate ideas and activities for this year’s Youth Summit.
