Schuylkill County Commissioners have found another place to temporarily house local inmates to alleviate crowding at the lock-up in Pottsville.
On Oct. 22, the Commissioners OK’d a one-year contract with Montour County to temporarily house inmates there. The per-diem rate for housing inmates at Montour County is $75.
This contract will automatically renew every year. It can be terminated at any time if and when either side submits a 60-day written notice to quit.
Montour County is just one of several county prisons where Schuylkill sends inmates to alleviate overcrowding in Pottsville.
In September, the Commissioners approved the renewal of a similar deal with Clinton County, which will house inmates at $73 per day. Similar contracts are in place with Northumberland County ($72 per day) and Centre County ($75).
At the Oct. 8 Schuylkill County Prison Board meeting, Warden Michael Buchanan reported that there was one triple-celling situation at the local jail. At that time, the current number of inmates temporarily housed at approved facilities was 54:
- Centre: 22
- Clinton: 9
- Northumberland: 23
