A Schuylkill County is facing a felony charge for allegedly failing to appear for his Megan’s Law verification as a sex offender.
Police say David Murphy, 61, of Auburn, failed to appear for his Megan’s Law verification window between the dates of May 14 and May 23.
A review of Murphy’s Megan’s Law record allegedly showed that he was out of compliance with his sexual offender registration requirements.
Murphy was convicted of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse on Sept. 11, 1990, and is required to register with State Police once a year for the rest of his life.
Police say they used the PA Sexual Offender Registration Tool (SORT) and learned that Murphy’s last appearance was on March 5 when he appeared at the State Police-Reading headquarters.
Murphy was interviewed by State Police on June 2 at the Schuylkill Haven barracks. Police say they asked Murphy if he’d received his verification update letter, which he confirmed he’d gotten. That letter was sent on May 5, police say.
A preliminary hearing where Murphy will have to answer to a third-degree felony charge of failing to register is scheduled for Dec. 5 at District Court in Tremont.
