An arrest warrant has been issued for a Schuylkill County man who police say stole jewelry from a woman’s home while he was helping her jump her car battery.
Police report that a Coaldale woman told them that she was having trouble with her vehicle on Oct. 14 when she was approached by Darren Charbonnier, 38, of Tamaqua, who had offered to help her.
The woman said that while Charbonnier was helping her with her car, she invited him inside her home. She told police that the two had discussed jumping the car battery but when that didn’t work, she said she went to a local store to purchase a new battery.
When she returned home, she told police that Charbonnier was in her house and going through her drawers and cabinets. She told police that she had forgotten to lock her door after previously allowing Charbonnier inside earlier to get the jump pack but he did not have permission to be in her house while she went to purchase a battery.
The woman told police that she discovered several items of jewelry missing, including three gold diamond rings and three 18K gold necklaces. She told police they have a value of about $3,000.
Police say they used surveillance footage from neighbors to positively identify Charbonnier as the man who’d helped the victim in this incident and that they were aware of him from previous interactions with him.
Charbonnier allegedly told the victim that he lived with a woman across the street. Police say they knocked on that neighbor’s door but got no answer.
Charbonnier has been charged with felony counts of burglary, theft, and receiving stolen property.
