Schuylkill County Man Jailed After Allegedly Breaking Into His Ex’s Home

Dewitt held on $20K bail

A Schuylkill County man is facing a felony burglary charge following an alleged incident last week.

State Police say they were dispatched to a home in Cass Township shortly after 2 a.m. on Oct. 8. Upon their arrival, Troopers say they encountered their suspect – identified as Craig Dewitt, 34, of Pottsville – standing in the driveway with his hands in the air. They say Dewitt wasn’t wearing a shirt and drunk.

Police say they spoke with the victim of the alleged incident who said Dewitt, her ex-boyfriend, entered her home without permission. She said her and her current boyfriend were asleep until they were awakened by Dewitt yelling and ripping the bed sheets off them.

Dewitt allegedly had entered the home through an unlocked basement door and ate food in the kitchen before going into the bedroom.

Police say they reviewed text messages sent to Dewitt by the victim demanding that he stay away. Dewitt reportedly told police he thought it was OK to be there because the door was unlocked.

As police were transporting Dewitt back to the Frackville barracks for processing, they say he was joking about how the male victim reacted to his presence in the bedroom.

In addition to the felony burglary charge, police have also charged Dewitt with felony criminal trespass and a misdemeanor count of theft as well as two summary counts of harassment.

Dewitt was arraigned on Oct. 8 before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley, who set bail at $20,000 cash. He was sent to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post bail.

A preliminary hearing on these charges is scheduled for District Court in Tremont on Thursday.
