Students at Saint Clair Area School District got hands-on last week with fire safety.
Members of Saint Clair Fire Dept. hosted a demonstration to mark Fire Prevention Month.
Students were shown numerous pieces of fire fighting equipment and a few pieces of fire apparatus. They also had the opportunity to handle a live fire hose and learn life-saving information inside a Fire Safety House.

In the Fire Safety House, Saint Clair Fire Chief Frank Uhrin told students the importance of having smoke detectors and instructed them on what to do in the event of a fire at their home.
Uhrin showed students scenarios inside the Safety House that could lead to a fire. As he did that, the demonstration trailer began filling up with smoke (no, it wasn’t real smoke) and students learned how to get down on the floor and crawl to safety, where Uhrin was there to assist them down a ladder and outside the building.

“We’re trying to educate the kids in the event that there’s any kind of emergency in their home,” Uhrin tells The Canary.
He says days like last Wednesday go a long way toward helping school-age children what to do and what to expect in the event of an emergency. He said kids now know what firefighters look like, what they do, and that they’re there to help.

“That way, they’re not scared of us. They know we’re there to help them and not to panic,” Uhrin says. “It’s hard to stay calm in a situation like that but the more educated they are and knowing what to expect, they can be better prepared to handle the situation.”
