Charlie Kirk Memorial Planned for Sunday in Schuylkill County

Vigil will focus on Kirk’s faith, not politics, organizers say

A group in Schuylkill County has organized a vigil this weekend in memory of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk was assassinated Sept. 10 on the campus of Utah Valley State University, where he was speaking at Turning Point USA debate event. He was the founder of the conservative organization, Turning Point USA.

On Sunday, Oct. 5, from 6-7 p.m., a group of like-minded conservatives is planning to gather for a vigil in honor of Kirk’s life and his dedication to Jesus Christ, they say.

The vigil will be held on the Jake’s Fireworks property at 32 Industrial Rd., West Mahanoy Township, outside Frackville.

Sunday’s event will feature four speakers: Nichole McCabe, Frackville borough councilman Brian Russell, Sophie Saks, and Nikolas Zaharick.

According to Heather Hagan, a native of Philadelphia who moved to Schuylkill County a number of years ago, although Kirk’s organization did have a political bent, Sunday’s vigil will focus more on the activist’s faith.

Hagan tells The Canary that she began listening to Kirk’s podcasts several months ago and immersed herself in his content. And it was his relationship with God that attracted her most to him.

“The most important thing is that he loved God. Even though he went to colleges and had debates with college kids, his base was about Jesus and God. That’s why I listened to him. He was very family-oriented. He tried to give everyone a voice,” she says.

Those speaking on Sunday all connected through Kirk’s content and message, Hagan added.

What Sunday won’t be, she said despite how they might be affiliated politically, is a Trump rally.

“We don’t want this to be political. We’re not hanging out with Trump flags. They look at (Kirk) as just being political,” Hagan said. “We want this to be about Charlie’s life and how he served God. “The most important things in his life were God and Jesus.”

Security will be on site at Sunday’s vigil.
