Schuylkill Shelters Take Precautions After Stray Dogs Die of Parvo Infection

Strays Tom and Jerry died Thursday

Two animal shelters in Schuylkill County have temporarily closed intake operations after a pair stray dogs at one facility died Thursday due to suspected parvovirus infection.

Hillside SPCA announced Thursday that two stray dogs recently brought to its shelter tested positive for the virus, also known as parvo. The dogs, named Tom and Jerry, each died on Thursday.

Hillside has placed its shelter under quarantine for two weeks. Adoptions will be handled on a case-by-case basis, and volunteer activity is being limited to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

“While our current animals are vaccinated, it is crucial that we take every precaution,” Hillside said in a public statement. “We’d also like to remind the public that situations like this can often be prevented by keeping your pets up-to-date on all recommended vaccines.”

Sherrie Schafer, manager at Hillside SPCA, tells The Canary, “Parvovirus is highly contagious and can spread quickly, putting countless pets at risk. The most effective way to stop deadly diseases like parvo is simple—keep your animals up to date on their vaccines. A few preventative shots can save lives and prevent heartache.”

Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA said its shelter has not had any cases of parvovirus but is also halting intake temporarily.

“We want to assure our community that Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA currently has no cases of parvovirus at our facility,” the shelter said in a social media post. “To minimize risk, our intake is temporarily closed until the situation is under control.”

Meet-and-greet appointments for dog adoptions will still take place at Ruth Steinert, though proof of vaccination is required for any personal pets brought along.
