A Schuylkill County woman is now facing criminal charges after police say she contacted 9-1-1 a total of 23 times in less than 2 weeks for exactly 0 emergencies.
Back on Sept. 4, at about 11:30 p.m., police say Kelsey Kurtz, 32, of McAdoo, phoned Luzerne County 9-1-1 to say that her boyfriend needed an ambulance at his workplace because he had a rapid heartbeat due to the nudes she had just sent him.
EMS personnel reported to her boyfriend’s workplace and found out that never happened.
That apparently wasn’t the first and it wouldn’t be the last time Kurtz is alleged to have contacted 9-1-1 in both Schuylkill and Luzerne counties via phone and text messages.
About an hour later, Kurtz contacted Luzerne County 9-1-1 requesting an ambulance at her McAdoo apartment to attend to her boyfriend. She reportedly did this an hour after that, too, and each time, first responders learned there was nothing wrong.
Police say that between 10:25 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 1:21 a.m. on Sept. 5, Kurtz contacted Schuylkill County 9-1-1 a total of six times. Dispatchers contacted Kurtz’ boyfriend who said he was fine and didn’t need an ambulance.
Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sept. 5, police say they responded to Kurtz’ apartment in McAdoo to conduct a welfare check. They determined that Kurtz was highly intoxicated and that her boyfriend was fine. Police say they informed Kurtz that her continuously contacting 9-1-1 for no reason in the future could result in criminal charges.
That warning apparently did nothing to deter Kurtz.
On Sept. 6, at about 1:45 a.m., Kurtz once again called Schuylkill County 9-1-1 to report a domestic incident involving herself and her boyfriend. Police say they responded and spoke with both.
Kurtz reportedly said that her boyfriend took her phone and that resulted in a verbal argument.
After speaking with Kurtz’ boyfriend, they learned that he took her phone to prevent her from calling 9-1-1 all the time.
Kurtz responded by calling 9-1-1.
On Sept. 16, at about 5:30 a.m., police say Kurtz once again called Schuylkill County 9-1-1. This time, she reported an unresponsive male in her apartment. EMS personnel responded and learned that claim was unfounded.
Kurtz allegedly called 9-1-1 in Schuylkill County two more times that same morning for the same reason.
So, at about 6:45 a.m., police responded once again and attempted to make contact with Kurtz. Kurtz, however, did not answer the door when police arrived. Police say they called Kurtz on the phone. She answered and reportedly said she couldn’t answer the door because she was “on bed rest.”
When police told Kurtz she’d be facing criminal charges, she allegedly just hung up the phone.
Further investigation, police say, revealed that between 9:26 a.m. on Sept. 3 and 6:26 a.m. on Sept. 16, Kurtz had called 9-1-1 in both Schuylkill and Luzerne counties a total of 26 times.
Kurtz has been charged with misdemeanor counts of communications with 9-1-1 systems and disorderly conduct.
