Local officials will assess the damage caused by the presumed tornado in Mahanoy City on Monday night.
According to Schuylkill County Emergency Management director John Blickley, officials from the Borough of Mahanoy City, Mahanoy City Fire Dept. and EMA will do an initial round of damage assessment later Tuesday morning.
A crew from National Weather Service is expected to arrive around noon to do their assessment. Later Tuesday, they are expected to confirm that it was a tornado that struck Mahanoy City just before 8 p.m. on Memorial Day.
At that time, strong winds entered from the west of Mahanoy City and caused sporadic severe damage to numerous buildings and trees.
Eyewitnesses recall seeing a swirling wind pick up debris along a path from Mahanoy Area School District before heading right down W. Centre St.
Several roofs are presumably ripped from their buildings. Numerous trees were uprooted in the path of the storm.
It’s believed that no one was displaced from their home on account of the storm.
According to Blickley, as of Tuesday morning, just 6 PPL Electric customers remain without power. So, hundreds have had their power restored since the storm hit. He said PPL crews worked through the night to bring electricity service back to those who lost power during the storm.
