A National Weather Service Survey team has confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down in Mahanoy City on Monday night.
NWS says maximum wind speeds of 90 mph are believed to have occurred during the tornado.
EF Scale (or Enhanced Fujita Scale) is used to estimate the speed of winds during a tornado. EF1 tornado wind speeds range between 86-110 mph.
Severe wind damage has been noted along a path from the Mahanoy Area School District through the west end of downtown Mahanoy City.
NWS says it’ll have more details on the tornado itself later Tuesday evening.
Schuylkill County EMA Update
Schuylkill County Emergency Management and Mahanoy City officials say homeowners in the borough should contact their insurance companies, take pictures of damages, and save receipts from any purchases made toward repairs on their property.
Damages should be reported to the Mahanoy City Borough office at 239 E. Pine St. or Schuylkill County EMA at 570-622-3739.
