The Arizona Cardinals have officially named Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach. Gannon joins the team after spending the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gannon is a rising star in the NFL coaching ranks, having worked his way up from a defensive quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 to his current position as head coach of the Cardinals. He has also worked as a defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts.
Gannon’s hiring comes after the Cardinals parted ways with former head coach Kliff Kingsbury at the end of the 2021 season. Kingsbury had been with the team for three seasons, but was unable to lead the team to consistent success in the highly competitive NFC West.
With Gannon, the Cardinals are hoping to build on the success they had in the 2021 season, when they finished with an 11-6 record and made it to the playoffs. Gannon is known for his defensive coaching prowess, which should be a valuable asset for the Cardinals, who had a top-ten defense in the league last season.
In a statement, Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill expressed his enthusiasm for Gannon’s hiring. “Jonathan is a highly respected coach in the NFL, and we are thrilled to have him lead our team,” Bidwill said. “His defensive expertise is well-known around the league, and we believe he has the vision and leadership skills to take our team to the next level.”
Gannon, for his part, said he was excited for the opportunity to lead the Cardinals. “I am honored to be the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals,” he said. “This is a team with a lot of talent, and I can’t wait to get started and build a winning culture here in Arizona.”
