One school in Schuylkill County is closed Friday due to what it’s calling a threat posted to social media.
Students at Gillingham Charter School in Pottsville will not be in class on Friday, Sept. 11, due to the threat. Officials there and police in Pottsville are actively investigating the threat.
Kat Staskowski, head of operations, safety, and security at Gillingham tells Coal Region Canary the threat was discovered Thursday afternoon. Immediately after it was discovered, about 15 minutes before dismissal for the day, students and staff at the school were placed on restricted movement, meaning they couldn’t leave their classrooms and doors had to be closed.
Dismissal was conducted as normal, she says.
Staskowski couldn’t disclose the nature of the threat or to what site it was posted – just that it was based on a current trend – as the investigation into it is still ongoing. She says to protect the safety of students at Gillingham, it was decided to close school of Friday.
