Schuylkill County Woman, Prison Inmate, Charged with Assaulting CO

A Schuylkill County woman faces a felony aggravated assault charge after allegedly striking a corrections officer in the face at the local prison.

Megan May, 35, of Schuylkill Haven, was charged by police following the Aug. 28 incident at Schuylkill County Prison. In addition to aggravated assault, police charged May with simple assault and harassment.

Police in Pottsville say they responded to the prison at about 11:30 a.m. for a report of an assault. A prison captain provided officers with surveillance footage, incident reports, and photos showing a corrections officer with a swollen upper lip and an open wound on her hand.

The corrections officer was transported to a hospital for treatment, police say.

During a phone interview with police, the corrections officer explained she was escorting May from a holding cell to be seen by prison medical staff. As May exited the cell into the hallway, the corrections officer looked away to tell May where they were going, police say. At that moment, May allegedly struck her in the face.

A scuffle ensued as the corrections officer attempted to restrain May, police say. May allegedly continued to resist and shove the corrections officer until other prison staff arrived to assist in restraining her.

May was arraigned on Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge James Reiley. Reiley set bail at 10% of $15,000.
