A Schuylkill County woman who allegedly stabbed a man because he was making comments about her brother saw charges against her withdrawn last week. The victim in the case seems to have disappeared from the area.
However, District Attorney Mike O’Pake said if they can find the victim in the case, he intends to refile the charges against 19-year-old Markasha Maxwell, of Schuylkill Haven.
Maxwell appeared before Magisterial District Judge Casimir Kosciolek last week for a preliminary hearing to answer to charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, possessing an instrument of crime, and simple assault. She’d been held at Schuylkill County Prison since early July after being unable to post $50,000 bail.
Police say Maxwell admitted to stabbing Nicholas Moore twice on July 6 after she said he was making comments about her brother earlier that day. She said “I don’t play” when it comes to comments about her brother.
Moore suffered stab wounds to his back and hamstring in the incident. When police encountered Moore at the intersection of Paxson Ave. and Dock St., they say he was bleeding and fatty tissue was protruding from his leg where he’d been stabbed. He reportedly told police that Maxwell was upset that he refused to leave his wife, who was in a treatment facility, for her.
At last week’s preliminary hearing, however, Moore did not show. Police say they attempted to serve him a subpoena to appear for the hearing but could not find him. They say they called four different phone numbers that might be his and contacted a local associate in an attempt to find him.
It’s believed that Moore left the area for Delaware, where he has family.
O’Pake told Kosciolek that if his office or police find Moore, they’ll refile charges against Maxwell.
